Know Your Healthy Weight

Safe weight loss starts with figuring out what your healthy weight should be for someone of your age and height. Speak to your family doctor, or calculate your body mass index (BMI) to see where you stand right now.  Once you know where you stand according to the Center for Disease Control, you can work out a plan to get to where you want to be.  If you realize that you are overweight, the first step you should take is to ask yourself where you can make the biggest changes in your diet.  For instance, if you admit to be a junk food addict, focus on replacing junk food with healthy fruits and vegetables that you enjoy. Or, if you realize that you watch more than two hours of TV per day, you should figure out a way to exchange one hour of TV for one hour of physical activity, like riding a bike, joining an athletic team, or walking to school.

Daily Habits for Safe Weight Loss

There are a few very simple things that you can do on a daily basis to encourage safe and healthy weight loss and discover how to get fit.

  • Hydrate –You should drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day in order to keep your metabolism healthy and to flush out wastes. Your metabolism is what controls how quickly you burn energy (food), so water is also important for weight control.  Your skin and hair will also benefit from plenty of water, so drink up!
  • Eating breakfast – Eat breakfast every day.  Breakfast gets your metabolism going and gives you the energy that you need. Starting the day with breakfast will keep you from pigging out later or from craving junk food.
  • Balancing food groups - Throughout your day, you should eat as many vegetables as you want, and then eat small portions of meat, dairy, and fats.  Sugar is something that you should only have in tiny amounts, as sugar that does not get burned up by exercise will be stored as fat cells in your body.
  • Portion control – Obesity is mostly caused by overeating.  To avoid overeating, try to prepare your own meals whenever possible.  Also, try serving your meal on a smaller plate, and only snack on small, healthy foods between meals, such as apple slices.  Eat slowly, put your fork down between bites, and you will be less likely to eat as much. You should only eat when you are hungry – listen to your body!
  • Exercise – In order to know how to get fit, you must begin to exercise.  You should exercise at least three to five times a week.  Try walking, jogging, or joining a sports team!  You could even get up and dance in your bedroom.  As long as you’re moving, your body will benefit!

The key to knowing how to get fit is eating in moderation and getting lots of exercise.  Your body has a big job ahead of it – treat your body right and it will not let you down!
